Zimbabwe will become a leading producer of sugar cane

The Zimbabwe government has approved the Zimbabwe Sugar Industry Development Plan 2026-2035. This is a long-term strategy aimed at doubling the productivity of the sugar industry while simultaneously implementing innovative agricultural practices and developing related industries.
By 2035, Zimbabwe will become a leading producer of sugar cane and its derivatives. The main areas of development include expanding ethanol production, generating renewable energy, producing biofertilizers, livestock feed, bioplastics, and other products derived from sugar cane by-products such as molasses and oilcake.
The plan's targets for 2035 include increasing the yield of sugar cane from 81 to 110 tons per hectare, increasing annual sugar production from 400,000 to 500,000 tons, and expanding ethanol production from 155 to 600 million liters per year. The plan also calls for increasing electricity generation from 23 to 200 megawatts and doubling sugar exports from 100,000 to 200,000 tons per year.
