Zimbabwe to increase national grain storage capacity

Zimbabwe plans to increase its national grain storage capacity to 1.5 million tons by 2030 to strengthen food security and resilience to climate change.

The authorities will build grain storage facilities not only in grain-producing regions, but also in other areas to place supplies closer to the settlements most in need of food. The new buildings will be powered by solar panels and will be able to store grain for up to five years.

The government intends to create a strategic grain reserve of 450,000 tons by the end of 2026: 300,000 tons will be purchased immediately, and an additional 150,000 tons will be obtained as a result of the upcoming wheat harvest.

Meanwhile, the agricultural season of 2025/2026 has brought high yields. As of July 30, 2026, 1.96 million hectares of corn were planted in Zimbabwe, compared with 1.81 million hectares a year earlier. As a result, corn production increased from 2.20 million tons to 2.68 million tons, which is 17.1% more than last year.

The Zimbabwe storage expansion strategy was developed after a severe drought hit the country in 2024. During the crisis, the government distributed 328,000 tons of grain to 6.5 million people. The authorities also allocated 33,000 tons of grain to 4.5 million schoolchildren as part of school nutrition programs.
