Zimbabwe to increase cement production
Zimbabwe-based steel giant Manhize integrated steel, owned by the Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO), is set to begin cement production in October 2026, when construction of a new plant is completed.
The new cement plant is expected to produce about 400,000 tons of cement per year using blast furnace slag formed as a by-product during steel production.
DISCO, a subsidiary of China's Tsingshan Holding Group is already producing pig iron, steel billets and reinforcement bars. About 60% of DISCO's steel output is sold locally while the remaining 40% is exported mainly to other countries in Southern Africa.
The expansion comes as the country undertakes major infrastructure projects, including the construction of housing, roads and dams, which increases the demand for cement and other building materials.
