Zimbabwe digitizes its mining industry

Zimbabwe is actively implementing plans to create a Mining Cadastre Registration System, a digital registry of all mining rights in the country. The new electronic platform aims to eliminate the drawbacks of paper-based documentation and build investor confidence in one of the key sectors of the economy.
The historic reliance on paper records and handheld GPS devices has often resulted in imprecise demarcation of mining claims, particularly in lucrative gold-mining areas, fuelling ownership disputes, litigation and revenue losses.
Currently, the Zimbabwe Ministry of Mines and Mining Development maintains a repository of more than 60,000 documents, including lease agreements, exploration and mining licenses, exclusive rights and other permits.
