Zimbabwe bans lithium exports

The Government of Zimbabwe has imposed a ban on the export of lithium concentrates and other unprocessed ores. The ban will last until the authorities establish monitoring systems across the entire value chain in the mining industry.
The decision was made after it became known that foreign mining companies had significantly increased the volume of mining and export of minerals before the ban scheduled for 2027 came into force.
The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organization (ZELO) supported the government's action and said that domestic lithium processing could transform the country from an exporter of minerals to a key player in global battery production.
Zimbabwe is the largest lithium producer in Africa, and most of the mineral is shipped to China.
