The gas production plant in Rwanda will start operating in 2028

According to the Minister of State for Infrastructure of Rwanda, Jean de Die Uwihanganye, the LNG plant for the production of methane extracted from Lake Kivu will start operating in the first quarter of 2028. The plant will produce about 990,000 cubic meters of gas daily.
Construction of the plant began in 2022. The Government of Rwanda has entered into a 25-year concession agreement with Gasmeth Energy Ltd to extract methane gas from the deep, methane-rich waters of Lake Kivu in Karongi District, Western Province.
Lake Kivu contains an estimated 60-70 cubic kilometers of methane, of which 44.7 cubic kilometers are considered recoverable. Methane gas from the lake is already being used to generate electricity.
