Telecommunications generated $240 billion for Africa

According to GSMA’s Mobile Economy Africa 2026 report, mobile technologies and services generated $240 billion for the African economy in 2025, equivalent to 7.8% of the continent's GDP and supporting the creation of approximately 13 million jobs.

Mobile broadband networks cover the vast majority of the continent's population, and only 9% of Africans still live outside coverage areas. However, digital adoption remains incomplete: nearly 63% of people live within coverage areas but do not use mobile internet.

Telecommunications companies not only provide connectivity but are also developing digital platforms, financial services, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. AI is already being actively used by operators to improve network performance, enhance customer service, and support new digital services.

Mobile operators are expected to invest over $76 billion in network infrastructure between 2026 and 2030. By 2030, the African telecommunications market is projected to reach $290 billion, with 5G accounting for 21% of total mobile connections on the continent.
