Tanzania plans to double honey exports
The Tanzania Department of Forestry and Beekeeping has launched a strategy to increase honey production and exports from 24% to 50% of the country's total output by 2027.
Among the effective measures designed to help achieve this goal are scientific research of plant species such as Mtonga Bahari and carnation to determine their potential in producing distinctive honey varieties, closer cooperation with educational institutions dealing with beekeeping issues, and training the population in modern beekeeping methods through the implementation of the "Better Tanzania Beekeeping Sector Development Programme", seminars and exhibitions.
Tanzania accounts for about 1.7% of global honey production, which ranks second in Africa and 14th in the world. It is estimated that this sector provides about two million jobs in the country.
