Tanzania inaugurated new hydropower project
Tanzania officially inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project on 22 August 2026 on the Rufiji River. The project cost is 2.84 billion US dollars. The construction was fully funded from the national budget of Tanzania.
According to data released by the Ministry of Energy of Tanzania, the installed capacity of the Julius Nyerere hydroelectric power plant (HPP) is 2115 MW. After the launch of the facility, the total electricity generation capacity in the country will reach 4,646 MW.
The HPP was built by an Egyptian consortium of Arab contractors and Elsewedy Electric. Construction lasted from June 2019 to March 2025. The new HPP is expected to create an excess of electricity, support industrial growth and allow Tanzania to expand electricity exports to neighboring countries.
