South Africa allocates half a billion dollars for science

South Africa will allocate 10.4 billion rand, or about 572 million dollars, for science, technology and innovation in the 2026/2027 fiscal year.
On May 15, 2026, the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation presented an annual development program that provides support for scientific research, the widespread use of artificial intelligence and the production of vaccines.
The South African government intends to increase spending on research and development to 1.5% of GDP, while expanding industrial and African strategic technology partnerships.
