Somalia will warn citizens about natural threats

The Federal Government of Somalia in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Green Climate Fund has launched the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), which will alert citizens about droughts, floods and other natural threats.
According to Ahmed Abdi Aden, Deputy Commissioner of the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the initiative will be an important step in strengthening national capacities for forecasting and responding to natural disasters.
By 2030, the authorities expect to reduce deaths related to natural disasters by 42% and expand the coverage of early warning systems from the current 20% to full coverage of the country. It is expected that the project will increase the safety of 8 million residents of the country.
