Mozambique to connect villages to 5G network
The Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Americo Muchanga, announced that Mozambique will connect at least 300 new rural settlements to broadband Internet in the coming months.
The project is part of the Internet for All program aimed at expanding Internet access by 2030. As part of the program, it is planned that mobile communications will cover 95% of the country's territory, and the Internet will become available to 99% of the country's population.
During the tender announced in January 2026, 301 settlements have already been identified, divided into three sections in the south, in the center and in the north of the country, with the aim of reaching more than 90% of the population in the affected areas.
The government plans to provide up to 4,000 schools with Internet connectivity and deploy about 10,000 new 4G and 5G access points. It is also reported that since the beginning of the year, 149 rural settlements have already been connected to the Internet.
According to the World Bank, in 2024, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks in Mozambique covered 88%, 86%, 84% and 10% of the country's population. The population in the same year was estimated at 34.6 million people, 61% of whom lived in rural areas.
