Morocco to build waste-to-energy plant

An international consortium led by Kanadevia Inova has signed a concession agreement with the government of Casablanca for the construction of a waste-to-energy plant worth 1.5 billion US dollars. Construction of the plant will begin before the end of 2026, and full-scale operation of the facility is scheduled for mid-2030.

The project will process about 1.5 million tons of household waste per year. The project will include a 115-megawatt waste incinerator, a 50-megawatt solar plant, and a 4-megawatt biogas plant using methane from landfills. According to experts, the new project will be able to meet the annual electricity needs of about 1 million people.

Moroccan contractor Somagec will build a facility next to the huge Mediouna landfill on the outskirts of Casablanca, which has been carrying garbage from the city for decades. Construction is expected to take about 3.5 years, although waste recycling and power generation may begin 6-10 months before completion.
