Morocco is Africa's industrial leader

The African Development Bank has compiled a rating of African countries on the industrialization index for 2025. Morocco came out on top of the continent for the first time, ahead of the Republic of South Africa, which has held the leading position since 2010. Morocco's index was 0.8415 points, while South Africa's was 0.8396 points. The top five also included Egypt (0.7827), Tunisia (0.7760) and Mauritius (0.6731).
The index evaluates industrialization according to three main parameters: indicators of industrial production, direct factors (investment, infrastructure, education, access to finance) and indirect factors (business environment, rule of law, public debt, inflation).
In 2025, North Africa remained the continent's most industrialized region with a score of 0.6891, ahead of South Africa with a score of 0.5850. It is followed by Central, Western and Eastern Africa. The indicators of most countries in North Africa are higher than the global average for the continent, with the exception of Libya and Mauritania.
