Kenya is testing digital radio

The Communications Authority of Kenya facilitated the launch of digital audio broadcasting services for radio in Nairobi.
Radio remains one of the most accessible media platforms in Kenya, reaching approximately 98% of households and supporting about 300 licensed broadcast services.
Existing FM frequencies in the VHF band are heavily overloaded in large urban areas, which limits opportunities for new broadcasters and leads to interference and reduced sound quality. To solve these problems, the Communications Authority developed a digital audio broadcasting system in 2023.
In 2026, Mast Rental Services became the first operator to launch a trial DAB+ network, which currently broadcasts 14 radio programs in the Nairobi coverage area.
Digital radio is expected to provide higher sound quality, reduce interference, and expand programming capabilities. Listeners will receive more diverse content, as well as additional data services such as information about programs and stations.
During the 12-month trial period, the Department will monitor and evaluate the operation of the digital radio.
