Important minerals discovered in Zanzibar
The head of Mineral Division within Zanzibar’s Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals, Ali Hassan Mrisho, said that geologists have discovered promising deposits of heavy mineral sands, including ilmenite and zircon.
These minerals are important elements of modern industry. Ilmenite is one of the main sources of titanium, which is widely used in the aerospace industry. Zircon is valued for its applications in ceramics, metallurgy and the production of refractory materials.
The Zanzibar Government is working with the Geological Survey of Tanzania to undertake more detailed assessments aimed at determining the scale, quality and commercial viability of the identified resources.
