Ghana to build fertilizer plant

Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture has signed a memorandum of understanding with Omanbapa AgriTech in Accra on the construction of a $10 million organic fertilizer plant.

The project will start with the installation of a mixing plant and then expand to a fully integrated processing plant producing organic fertilizers for the Ghanaian market, with long-term plans to serve regional export markets.

The capacity of the plant, which will be located in the Ashanti or Ahafo region, will range from 20,000 to 30,000 tons per year, and then reach 60,000 tons, which will reduce Ghana's dependence on imported chemical fertilizers. Agricultural waste will be used as raw materials.

Reducing dependence on imported fertilizers remains a strategic priority for Ghana. According to data compiled by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), the country's apparent consumption of chemical fertilizers averaged about 404,000 metric tons annually between 2019 and 2023.

The World Bank projected that global fertilizer prices will rise by more than 30% in 2026 because of disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor that handles nearly one-third of the world's seaborne fertilizer trade, or about 16 million metric tons annually.
