Ghana strengthens rice sector

In Ghana, rice is becoming a strategic pillar of the country's agricultural and industrial development.

According to the forecast of the US Department of Agriculture, rice consumption in Ghana in the 2025/26 season will reach 1.8 million tons, compared with 1.75 million tons in the previous period, driven by population growth and urbanization.

Local rice production will reach about 900,000 tons, which is almost half of the country's needs and 18% more than last year.

The growth was made possible by measures such as increasing the level of mechanization of production processes, improving storage and processing conditions, simplifying market access for manufacturers and establishing clear pricing rules. These measures are aimed at creating sustainable jobs, increasing farmers' incomes, and attracting local and international investment.

However, Ghana remains heavily dependent on imports, which are projected to reach 1 million tons over the same period, mainly from Vietnam, India and Thailand.
