Ethiopia plans to become a world leader in banana exports

The National Banana Conference entitled "From Bunch to Breakthrough: Positioning Ethiopia as a Global Banana Export Powerhouse" was held in Addis Ababa, attended by government agencies, producers, exporters and financiers.
The aim of the conference is to identify practical measures to unlock Ethiopia’s banana export potential and increase the crop’s contribution to income, employment and economic growth.
Opening the conference, Sofia Kassa, Minister of State for the Agricultural Investment Sector, said that Ethiopia has great potential to compete in the global banana market, and called on producers to raise product quality to international standards.
The conference participants proposed to step up breeding work to create new varieties that are resistant to diseases and have higher yields, open new nurseries, and use the experience of flower and vegetable producers who, with the support of the government, were able to develop production, logistics, and international market relations.
