Ethiopia launches 25-year Energy development plan
The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has unveiled a comprehensive 25-year national master plan for the expansion and modernization of the electricity distribution system, which is planned to be implemented by 2049.
According to the plan, peak electricity demand will rise from 4,289 MW in 2025 to 39,327 MW by 2049, driven by rapid population growth, urban expansion, industrialization, and the rise of electric mobility. To meet this demand, 128 new electrical substations are planned to be built in the country.
The new plan complements Ethiopia's National Electrification 3.0 Program, developed by the Ministry of Water and Energy, which aims to ensure universal access to reliable, low-cost and sustainable electricity by 2035.
