The Eswatini Government has launched the first phase of the Road Infrastructure Development Program, which includes the construction of two 106 km-long roads.

The first highway with a length of 80.2 km will connect the settlements of Siphofaneni and Nsoko, and the second highway with a length of 25.7 km will connect Maloma and Siphambanweni. In addition to laying a new road surface, scales will be installed on the roads to control the axle load.

New roads will reduce transportation costs and travel time by at least half, improve transport links, stimulate regional economic growth and raise the standard of living of the population.

The total cost of the work is estimated at $175.71 million, which is 80 percent funded by the African Development Bank ($140.6 million) and 20 percent by the Government of Eswatini ($35.1 million).

In addition to road construction, 200 young people will be trained in construction skills, and another 50 will be trained in entrepreneurship. The project will also finance social infrastructure, including water supply systems, schools, clinics and markets along the route.
