Egypt launches monorail

On May 6, 2026, the first 56 km monorail in Africa was launched in Egypt. The new mode of transport connects Marshal Tantawi Station in New Cairo with Justice City Station in the New Administrative Capital.
There are 16 stations on the route. In the future, the number of stations will increase to 22, and the length of the road will reach 100 km. The route connects residential areas with key destinations, including administrative buildings, hospitals, universities, commercial centers, and cultural sites.
Trains running on the line are equipped with air conditioners, on-board monitoring systems and digital displays displaying route information. The carriages are equipped with wheelchair spaces and illuminated maps to ensure accessibility for passengers with different needs.
A three-tier fare payment system based on the distance of the trip has been introduced on the monorail. The cost of tickets starts from 20 Egyptian pounds (0.4 US dollars) for travel to five stations and will range from 60 to 80 Egyptian pounds after the line is fully operational.
