Côte d'Ivoire increases nickel production
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced that it is participating in the financing of a $180 million deal for Polynickel West Africa Holding to acquire a majority stake in Compagnie Minière du Bafing, the leading nickel producer in Côte d'Ivoire.
Despite the dominance of gold in the mining industry in Côte d'Ivoire, nickel production and revenue have been growing annually. In 2023, more than 2 million tons of nickel ore were shipped, worth over $100 million, making nickel the second-largest mineral resource in the country after gold.
Commercial nickel ore mining began in Côte d'Ivoire in 2017 with production volumes of 379,800 tons. Today, this indicator has grown almost 10 times, and the average annual growth of the industry is 36.7%. The estimated reserves of nickel in the country are estimated at 260 million tons.
