African countries have become major suppliers of fertilizers

Between April and June 2026, Egypt shipped 609,000 tons of urea to India, followed by Algeria with 245,000 tons and Nigeria with 244,000 tons. These three countries accounted for almost half of India's fertilizer imports during the quarter.
India's economic challenge is to reduce its dependence on geographically concentrated supplies. Despite the presence of 33 domestic plants with a total capacity of 26.9 million tons, the country still imports about 20% of its annual fertilizer needs.
The African agrochemicals market is significantly expanding its capabilities. In 2025, it was estimated at $12.21 billion, and by 2031 it could reach $15.08 billion, while fertilizers already account for 50.55% of its value.
