Africa is the fastest growing market for solar energy

Africa became the fastest growing solar energy market in the world in 2025.
In 2025, solar capacity on the continent increased by 17%, driven by massive imports of solar panels, mostly made in China.
The largest importers of solar panels in Africa are South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt.
In September last year, Nigeria announced plans to build a 1 GW solar panel factory, the largest in West Africa. Similar facilities are being built in Egypt, South Africa and Ethiopia.
At least 23 African countries, including South Africa, Tunisia, Kenya, Chad and the Central African Republic, currently generate more than 5% of their electricity from solar energy.
